Back to top1) Need to replace your Fuse Box?
The most overlooked component of any electrical system is the fuse box or consumer unit. There are many properties out there that STILL have the old fuse wire type fuse box protecting the system.
These are now out of date and potentially dangerous as many will NEVER have been checked properly by an Electrician. If you do have one of these older units then it is worthwhile giving us a call to carry out an electrical inspectionon your system for you.
These older boxes have not been installed for around 40 years which means that it is AT LEAST that old along with your wiring.
Back to top2) Electrical Checks
Did you know that an electrical inspection is recommended every ten years as a minimum by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET)?
This means that every ten years we should be carrying out professional electrical checks on your home’s wiring and fuse box. This type of check is VITAL for several reasons:
• To maintain the wiring system
• To alert you to any dangerous electrical faults
• To check the condition of the wiring
• Make sure electric shock protection is adequate
• Ensure there are no overloaded circuits
• To inspect the condition of sockets and switches
There is a way that you can check when the last inspection was carried out. Locate your consumer unit or fuse box. This may be under the stairs, in the garage, near the front door or elsewhere in the property.
It is sometimes by the electric meter and is generally a rectangular box that contains switches or fuses.
Once you have located the box, check for a “Date of Last Inspection” sticker. This sticker will contain the date that the system was last inspected and the next date of recommended inspection.
Check the date for the “next inspection”. If the date has passed then please get in touch. Without regular maintenance an inspection, electrical systems can fail, present danger without any outward signs or overheat and cause electrical fires in some circumstances.
In some cases, where the system has had faults or the wiring is beginning to deteriorate, an electrician will recommend that the system is inspected more frequently. Your sticker may only have a 5-year date or less, which may indicate that there have been previous problems with the wiring.
Back to top3) When should I have an inspection or new fuse box?
An Electrical Inspection should be carried out regularly but it is also a good idea when:
• You purchase a pre-owned home
• Any trauma occurs to the electrics
• Following water ingress into the electrical system
• After direct lightning strike
• You have major building work carried out
You should consider a new consumer unit:
• Every 20 years or so
• When safety regulations change
• After damage to the existing unit
• Before any major electrical work
It is not Illegal to have an old fuse box or to forgo an electrical safety check but it is good sense to have these things carried out. Also, if you ever require additional sockets or other electrical works in your home then it may be necessary to update the consumer unit and have an inspection carried out beforehand anyway.
